Modernism is all about material, shape, form, and the role of the artist in the final product.
For this project, I will demonstrate negative and positive space in the creation of an object's 'insides,' rather than forming the walls of a shape. I will also demonstrate my opinion on the role of the artist in the final product.

The Role of the Artist
In these two examples, using the same 'cube' shape, the role of the artist is drastically different. The cubes created by David Judd demonstrates the removal of the artist from the final project, as he relied on the use of machinery in production to create 'perfection.' There are no marks or imperfections within the cubes, as Judd believes the hands of the artist could only cloud the innate nature of art. David Smith takes the opposite approach, leaving tool marks to show the artist's presence. In Smith's piece, the artist is a 'creator,' rather than an 'engineer.' My personal opinion sides with that of David Smith, as I believe through the 'art' process, the artist is giving part of himself in the final product. In my final product for this project, I plan to clearly project myself as the artist through the final product.

Rough Design Plans
My design plan for this project is to take hundreds of paperclips and intertwine them with one another to create a sphere. I will not need any adhesive or connecting material, because paperclips have the ability to hook onto one another. Starting out may be hard because I will need to keep working with the movings materials that will not take shape right away. As the artist, I am an intrinsic part of the way each of the paperclips and connected, therefore I am projected through the final product in the form it takes on.

After I have the core of the sphere made, I will connect larger silver paper clips. These will be less strategically place and father apart, creating more negative space. In the final product there large paper clips are essential to creating the negative space I need to produce a sphere, while the smaller paper clips are able to provide a solid shape and core.
